Shifts in Time: Autumn 2025
In “Shifts in Time: Autumn”, the intrigue lies in the unexpected and how events unfold on the surface of the canvas. Various actions are explored to allow the media to interact freely and naturally. The process of creating a painting is not predetermined, nor is there a fixed formula for it. While preparation is important, intuition plays a central role in shaping the outcome. Over time, some paintings are displayed upright at different angles to stretch, shift, and change in character. Occasionally, paintings may be partially reworked or completely transformed.
The works are mixed media on canvas and presented in non-chronological order. Each measures 2 x 2.5 and 2 x 2 metres.
“Shifts in Time”, spanning from 1994 to 2024, traces the journey from the Flaw collection of paintings in the early 1990s to the current works in the Hidden Kingdoms and Shifting Worlds series. Parts 1–5 focus on the years 1994–2015, while Parts 6–8 examine developments from 2015 to 2022. Between 2016 and 2020, the emphasis was placed on microbial research conducted at the Centre for Bacterial Research at Newcastle University. This research laid the groundwork for transforming past events into artworks that engage with contemporary scientific, medical, and social themes. Both exhibitions, Hidden Kingdoms and Shifting Worlds, were displayed at the Centre for Bacterial Cell Biology in 2018 and 2022.
