Borders (1988–1994)

Borders is a collection of oil paintings made between 1988 and 1994. They arose from two distinct but significant influences: the epic struggle for independence at Flodden Hill in 1513 in the Scottish Borders, where I am from, and the pioneering work we conducted at the Art Studio in Sunderland. The collection also commemorates the Art Studio’s independence and its second major public exhibition of artwork, Creating a New World, presented at Sunderland’s Northern Centre for Contemporary Art. The exhibition, which included works by all Art Studio artists, was curated by Mike Hill, NCCA director, and opened by Grigor McClelland, Chairman of the Tyne and Wear Foundation.
