The Victory & Defeat collection originated at the Royal College of Art (RCA), where Hill studied from 1979 to 1982, and was first showcased there. A selection featured at Christie’s inaugural “New Graduate Art” event in London. The Imperial War Museum acquired pieces from “Victory and Defeat” for its public collection. In 1983, IWM’s keeper Angela Weight curated a small exhibition of Hill’s etchings and drawings, marking his first significant public exhibition.
The Victory & Defeat series continued when Hill was selected for a fellowship at the Artescape Trust in Lincoln and during a residency at Bishop Grosseteste University in Lincoln in the early to mid-1980s. Two etchings from 1975-78 were selected for the Stowells Trophy Printmaking Exhibitions at the Royal Academy in London in 1977 and 1978. The Joker series of etchings began around 1990-2000. “The Carnival” and the “Feather and Lace” series started around 2000.
